  • January 4 2007:
SC 1013 needs your help! This web page is being developed to find a way to rescue a soon to be lost subchaser.

I have had a fascination for wooden boats for many years. As each year passes I see more of the great vessels succumb to the elements and end up in a scrap yard. The Barba Negra, a once great sailing ship, now sits on the bottom in Savannah, Georgia. She is my inspiration to do what I can to save these vessels.

I came across SC1013 during causal web searching and decided to research her fate. I purchased the book Splinter Fleet to read more about these vessels.

My first target is to get her off the bottom during the first part of 2007.

I just realized that the e-mail link was bad on the main page. I have corrected it.

My plan was to return to the ship the week of February 5. I am sure those living in the area would not fault me for not stopping. The weather was miserably cold with icy conditions. I am postponing my trip until the weather improves.

On this next trip I plan to do a more thorough job of evaluating SC1013. I am looking for people knowledgeable with wooden boats to meet me there to do a sort of feasibility survey. I would appreciate it if interested parties would contact me.

I have had a few people e-mail me wishing me well. Every positive comment goes a long way.

Wow, a lot has been happening in the past couple of weeks!

I have spoken with many people concerning SC1013. Jeffrey Nilsson of the Historic Naval Ships Association was kind enough to include information concerning SC1013 in his weekly memorandum. This has caused many hits on the website. I have also contacted a few people involved with PT Boats to try and generate interest. In addition, Captain L. Meakes is looking at a few options in Baltimore. Thank you to all of these great people! I hope the momentum that is gaining will continue.

I still plan on returning to the boat the first part of April. Hopefully Capt' B will be available and we can spend some time working on an "attack plan." If I can find a place to temporarily moor her in Baltimore we will raise her at the same time. The pictures tell the story...if she was afloat I doubt the dock is sturdy enough to keep her from pulling free. We also need to be able to maintain a couple of pumps on board until she can be hauled. Anyone have any ideas???

I may try and create some type of e-mail based newsletter on SC1013. If you are interested in receiving one just send me your e-mail address and I will create a distribution list.

It seems as if every step forward I take two backward.

I was excited to find out about the possibility of a marine railway near SC1013 run by a non-profit group. Unfortunately it turns out that the carriage for the railway is only 55 feet long. So I'm back to square one...

Capt' B had to spend a little more time on the Chesapeake during April so we were unable to get together. It also looks like I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling for work during May. I have a feeling that time is running out for SC1013. I am desperate to get her off the bottom!

One idea that Capt' B had was to place her on a barge and do the work from there. This would work but it would cost $10,000 just to get her on the barge. In addition the barge would have to be purchased, rented, or donated for use during the hull restoration. Anyone know of any barges or scows that might be available?

It's amazing how many wooden boats are out there becoming derelicts. The more research I do the more boats I have come across. I have even thought of purchasing a boat to serve as a tender for SC1013. The boat could be the staging platform for work to be done, carry the generator, and provide a place to sleep. I currently have a small pile driving barge (20ft) that I could use as a platform once the pile driving pieces are removed.

I apologize for the delay in adding this post. As you can tell by the date May has come and gone. I have been very busy at work the past two months so have been unable to give SC1013 my utmost attention. I was unable to meet with Capt' B in June due to scheduling conflicts. I will be back in July and hope to meet him then.

I have been working on a couple of things though.
  • A small article was published in the Navy Archive Magazine
  • I have been in contact with an attorney and hope to have a non-profit organization set up in the next couple of weeks. Once the non-profit is set up I will them file for a tax exempt status with the IRS.
  • I have located a couple of barges that would make ideal work platforms. Was the non-profit tax exempt status is set up I hope to start some fund raising to get the ball rolling.
  • I have been contacted by a number of people that are checking with their local museums on the possibility of having SC1013 restored and moored there.

Things appear to have slowed. I am waiting to hear back form a number of people with great ideas on where to dock SC1013.

For all those that have sent me messages please give me an update! Your help is critical to the project!

    August 22 2007:
Sorry for the delay in updating the web page. I was recently given a temporary promotion...of course I still have to do my old job too! So now I am twice as busy as usual..,and of course the small monetary increase does not offset the loss of time.

This is going to be a BIG project and I am going to need a lot of help!

Location Location!! We need a place to put her once she has been raised! It would be great if we could find a location somewhere near Dundalk.

Capt. B and myself were to have met in August...but I ended up going to Portland Oregon for a week for work.

More updates to follow as they become available.
